Fun Things to Do Outside, Friends or No Friends!
No Friends = No Excuse
You're tired, your creativity has run dry, and you just need something to do. Well, you've come to the right place. I've come up with a variety of things to do outside and have placed them into two simple categories: Friends and No Friends. This means that having no friends around to play with is no longer an excuse! Also, the activities are a mix of active and not-that-active. So no matter what your current energy level is, you're sure to find something that will float your boat. Be sure to read quickly though, because you don't want to waste anymore of that beautiful day out there! Those days don't come around that often, so you have to take advantage of them by finding things to do outside. Here's the quick secret: it can be anything!
Friends
This section is for when you have a group of people ready to find things to do outside together. Some of the activities require equipment, but surely among a group of you there is somebody that will have what is needed. If not, these bullets can still serve as great starter ideas, and you can modify them to come up with your own!
1. Kickball - Who doesn't love a good game of kickball? Find some open space, take off 4 shoes for some bases and you've got yourself a game!
2. (Flag) Football - Touch or flag football is just as good as any tackle football game, especially if you're dealing with a co-ed group of friends. Grab some pigskin and let 'er fly.
3. (Ultimate) Frisbee - You don't have to play ultimate to have fun tossing a disc with a group. Do keep in mind, though, that this is one of those things to do outside when it's not a windy day.
4. Tennis - Same thing with the windy day here. It's not that wind will keep you from having fun, but tennis is a lot more enjoyable when the weather behaves.
5. Soccer - If it's the world's most popular sport, odds are that someone in the group will get a kick out of it (pun intended...). The same idea for kickball bases can be employed for goals here too. If nobody wants to give up their shoes, just use whatever you can find!
6. (Freeze) Tag - This is one of the most classic things to to do outside that can keep kids entertained for hours. No set up or equipment is required; just a lot of space and energy to burn.
7. Basketball - If the group is any bigger than ten, then the court tends to get a little crowded, but anywhere from one-on-one to five-on-five can be enough for a good time.
8. (Sand) Volleyball - Whether you're digging it out in a sandpit or just playing pepper in the yard, volleyball is a great group activity. See how many volleys you can get in a row!
9. (Street) Hockey - This one probably requires the most equipment, from the roller blades to the sticks to the pads (yes, please wear pads). But it can also be tons of fun! Just make sure someone is watching out to yell "Car!"
10. Buns Up - All you need is a wall, a ball, and buns of steel.
No Friends
It's not that you literally have no friends (although that may be the case too...), but sometimes it's just not possible to get everyone together to find things to do outside. Like I mentioned earlier though, that is no excuse! If you find yourself flying solo on a beautiful day that cannot be wasted, consider these ideas for things to do outside.
1. Go for a walk or run - It doesn't have to be far, and it doesn't have to be fast. Go at your own pace, and make sure that you're safe! No night wandering.
2. Ride a bike - Take the ol' two-wheeler out for a spin. Feel the wind in your hair. Go down some fast hills. Just remember, what goes up must come down.
3. Swim at the pool - There are a number of fun things to do outside at a pool, and swimming is one of them. If you get tired, catch some rays and lay out.
4. Shoot the basketball around - No game? No problem. There's nobody around to see you air ball. This is the perfect time to work on that three point shot. There are also some great resources out there for you to learn how to shoot a basketball.
5. Go rock climbing - Okay, you do need a spotter for this one, but there is probably a rock climbing gym near you that can provide you with all the safety equipment and personnel you need to make climbing rocks without friends an experience you can actually live to remember.
6. Read a book - Why read inside when you can read outside? Any book is made instantly better with a little sun and cool breeze.
7. Rollerblade - This may be one of the most underrated things to do outside ever. It is an activity that is easy to learn, gets you from A to B in a jiff, and actually turns out to be a great workout.
8. Talk on the phone - Yeah, technically another person is involved in this one too, but they don't have to be present with you. This day in age, people are just a phone call away. Why not enjoy a healthy dose of sun with your conversation?
9. Write in a journal - I bet you didn't expect reading and writing to be on the list of things to do outside, did you? As long as you've got a pen and pad, you've got an outlet for creativity. Where better to find inspiration than in the bustling activity of the great outdoors?
10. Whittle some wood - That's right, find a piece of wood and start whittling away. Why not? Give it a try. Just make sure you're careful with the blade... or at least that somebody is near enough to hear you scream.
